In May 2023, close to half of Mexico’s municipalities were in drought, according to the country’s National Water Commission. A year later, when the country went to elect a new president, much of the country was suffering from historic drought, water shortages, intense heat and occasional power outages.

Executive summary: Palm oil production is on the increase, which brings with it major economic benefits, but also significant sustainability challenges in terms of the impacts it has on the environment with the generation of methane, water and land use, and waste management. As a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Alfa Laval is committed to making a major contribution to mitigating against these impacts and has developed an innovative technology called POMEVap that is being used in the treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME), a by-product of the production process. A case study in India shows how POMEVap makes a substantial difference by ensuring that no methane is generated, minimizing water consumption, recovering additional palm oil and concentrating for reuse, and taking up less space to release land for other purposes.

With the support of Alfa Laval’s semi-welded plate heat exchangers and energy hunting expertise, a sulphuric acid plant in Northwest China could capture even their low-grade heat for re-use. In winter, all the recovered low-grade heat could be put back into their system with 30% being used in production and the remaining 70% going to space heating. During the summer, 14% of the energy that is no longer needed for indoor heating could be used to preheat boiler feedwater. This meant that they could significantly reduce the amount of fossil fuels used in production, without redesigning their entire factory footprint.
